Jonathan, I think the degrading of the education system is down to economics, the government want to have a workforce and they don’t care if it’s illiterate. I don’t think it’s maliciously done, just another example of government negligence. It may suit them in the short term to have an uneducated population but in the long term it will mean that the UK becomes a third world country with a ruling junta.
I don’t put it down to the Labour party, it’s been going on for years, at least since the 1970’s and part of it is to do with the egalitarian view held by many academics that to espouse a high culture is elitist and wrong and everything can be studied using the badly abused tools of cultural and literary theory.
But the basic problem is that the goverment don’t spend enough money on education, don’t spend it wisely, and haven’t done for years.
