French village life

Among my favourites is the Festival of the Pig in Trie sur Baise, north-east of Tarbes. Prizes are awarded to the people who can (a) best imitate the cries of a pig and (b) eat the most black pudding. The record is 1.4 metres of black pudding in four minutes. Both are serious activities and require training.

i really wish i could speak French. i can read Camus fairly easily, because he has a very lucid and simple style. i can follow spoken French to some degree. i just can’t pronounce it, not at all, not after 8 years of French lessons at school. If i could, i would learn French properly and move to a quiet village somewhere and imitate the cries of a pig, and eat a great deal of black pudding, and all would be well.
